Speaking English in Space (demo)

by Postindustrial Poets

/

about

This was the first Poets recording using Cubase, dating back into prehistoric January 2020, when COVID still seemed faraway, and Brexit the biggest issue. The normal verses talk about European cities we love (Paris, Rome, Sevilla, Lisbon). The bridge verses recount the final Dan Dare adventure - which may have inspired Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd's Astronomy Domine). We suggest that you do not listen to this track. If you do, put the headphones on and turn up the volume. It gets kind of weird...

We would like to dedicate this song to Restless Astronaut and to a girl from near Seville.

lyrics

I took the Eurostar, just to be there
I felt debonair, full of savoir faire
At five o'clock, when Paris wakes
Breakfast on croissants, not cornflakes.

(Chorus) Can you be British in a foreign location?
Can you speak English in space?
Can you be British in a foreign location?

I was pragmatic, undogmatic
Living in Rome, dancing through the traffic
I met a girl there, from near Seville
Years later, I'm with her still

(Chorus)

(Bridge 1)
Dan Dare beamed from Luxembourg, on a mission to save the Earth
Through the window of his spaceship, a distant sun appeared
Flying past Oberon, searching for aliens
Digby sneezed and the world was saved! We did it again!

(Chorus)

In a museum, down in Lisbon
I saw a picture, of a garden
And in the garden, of the museum
Thought of Salazar, and carnations

(Chorus)

(Bridge 2)
Dan Dare flew from Jupiter, got home again in time for tea
Went to see the Prime Minister
Took command of the British star fleet!
They're building him a spaceship
To found a colony on Mars
This time a year from now
They'll speak English in the stars!
